Hundreds of terrified shoppers fled a Dallas-area outlet mall after a gunman opened fire, killing at least eight people and wounding seven before being killed by a police officer.

The shooting in Allen, Texas, on Saturday follows another in Cleveland barely a week earlier, when a man fatally shot five people after a neighbour asked him to stop firing his weapon while a baby slept.

Police did not immediately provide details about the victims at Allen Premium Outlets, a sprawling outdoor shopping centre, but witnesses reported seeing children among them.

An Allen Police Department officer was at the mall on an unrelated call when he heard the shots and responded, firing on and killing the gunman. Police say they believe the shooter acted alone.
