A major earthquake with a magnitude of 7.2 struck Taiwan on Wednesday, killing at least nine people and injuring more than 800 on the island, according to the authorities.

The President-elect, Lai Ching-te, met with rescue officials in the affected area and stated that rescuing victims trapped under the rubble was the "top priority."

A local resident said, "it was shaking like this quite strongly. Maybe an earthquake hasn't happened in a long time, so it felt really terrifying.”

Meanwhile, Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen said “The national army will also provide support. The central and local governments will cooperate with each other to minimize the impact of the disaster."
