Spain's deputy prime minister Yolanda Diaz said on Monday that the defiance of Spanish soccer chief Luis Rubiales and the support he has received from some federation members shows that macho behaviour is systematic in Spanish society.

Spain's High Court prosecutor on Monday opened a preliminary investigation into whether Rubiales might have committed an act of sexual aggression when he grabbed player Jenni Hermoso and kissed her on the mouth after Spain's victory in the Women's World Cup.

Rubiales, 46, has been defiant over the kiss as "spontaneous, mutual, euphoric and consensual" - which has been condemned as unwanted by Hermoso, her teammates, several male players, and the Spanish government.

Meanwhile, Rubiales' mother started a hunger strike inside a church on Monday to protest against what she called her son's "inhumane treatment."
