Sweden officially becomes part of NATO

Sweden joined the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in Washington on Thursday, two years after Russia's invasion of Ukraine forced it to rethink its national security policy and decide that support for the alliance was the Scandinavian nation's best guarantee of security.

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson handed over the final documents to the U.S. government on Thursday, the final step in a lengthy process to secure the support of all members to join the military alliance.

"We actually, in a literal sense, made Sweden safer and more secure," Kristersson said. "And I'm proud to be the prime minister, I've had the job and the duty to to fulfill that."

For NATO, the accession of Sweden and Finland is the most significant in decades. It is also a blow to Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has sought to prevent any further strengthening of the alliance.
