Human Rights Watch has released a new report calling the situation in Sudan's West Darfur state one of ethnic cleansing -- and says crimes against humanity are being committed, including torture, rape and looting.

It's found that attacks by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces and its allied armed groups in el-Geneina, the capital of West Darfur State, have killed thousands of people and displaced hundreds of thousands as refugees.

In response - the NGO is calling on the United Nations and the African Union to 'urgently impose an arms embargo on Sudan, sanction those responsible for serious crimes and deploy a mission to protect civilians.'

Alan Boswell is Horn of Africa director at the International Crisis Group.
He says the international community has to act to prevent further atrocities from taking place.
