Heavy rain from Storm Ciarán has led to severe flooding in northern France, causing rivers to burst their banks and prompting red alerts in the Pas-de-Calais department on Tuesday.

"It's just material goods, everyone tells us, there are no injuries...we will see the extent of the damage. In the meantime, we can do nothing but weep," Municipal worker Sylvia Grare, whose house has been flooded, said.

Authorities reported "extremely difficult" driving conditions and potential power outages, leading to school closures in 69 towns and villages, according to La Voix du Nord.
