U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland invoked his family’s history fleeing persecution in Europe, as he took part in the lighting of the National Menorah on Sunday — the first night of Hanukkah.
Speaking during a ceremony on the Ellipse in front of the White House southern lawn, Garland said Americans must stand against antisemitism and “stand up against bigotry in any of its forms.”
Hanukkah, Hebrew for “dedication,” commemorates the 2nd Century BC victory of Judah Maccabee and his followers in a revolt in Judea and the restoration of the Jewish temple in Jerusalem.
The 44th annual lighting of the National Menorah was sponsored by the American Friends of Lubavitch.
