SpaceX’s first uncrewed test flight of its giant Starship, the world's biggest rocket, exploded nearly four minutes after its launch in Boca Chica, Texas. The spacecraft and Super Heavy Booster failed to separate, officials at the agency said during a live broadcast of the event.

Throngs of people watched from South Padre Island, several miles from the launch site, as the 400-foot (120 metres) Starship rocket lifted off for what was meant to be a round-the-world trip, before crashing minutes later into the Pacific Ocean.

There were no people or satellites aboard the giant rocket for its debut flight.

SpaceX’s first attempt at the launch was called off on Monday because of a stuck valve during the fueling stage.
