A fire at a lithium battery plant in South Korea has killed at least 22 people, most of them Chinese nationals, officials said Monday.

A witness said it sounded as if it was “raining bullets” when the fire and a series of explosions ripped through the factory in Hwaseong, run by battery manufacturer Aricell.

Officials said the victims likely succumbed to toxic gas within seconds of the blaze getting out of control. However, it is still unclear what started the explosions, they said.

Eighteen Chinese workers, two South Koreans and one Laotian are reportedly among the dead.
