A week after the torrential rains began, the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) said on Monday that it had been instructed to activate 10,000 troops for tasks including mop-up work and transporting aid.

Outside the town of Umbumbulu, which is about 45 km southwest of Durban, community members accompanied police officers and sniffer dogs to scour a river for a missing lady who had been swept away.

She was coming home from work accompanied by her son, when they both got washed away by floods, according to local officials.

The son's body had been found but not the mother's, according to local herdsman Mbukeni Khwela.

KwaZulu-Natal’s Premier Sihle Zikalala on Sunday said the death toll had risen to 443, with 63 people still unaccounted for.
