Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico made his first public comments since an assassination attempt on May 15, saying in a video posted to Facebook on Wednesday that he could possibly return to work this month. Fico called his attacker an activist of opposition parties, saying there was no reason to believe the shooter was a "lone lunatic."

"Since the September 2023 election, there is again no one holding up a mirror to the growing and well-fed opposition’s aggressiveness,” Fico said. “Physical threats against high-ranking government politicians, as was the case for [the] example of members of the National Council of the Slovak Republic Erik Kalinak and his wife, or Lubos Blaha, therefore became an acceptable standard of aggressive representatives of the opposition.”

Fico is recovering at home after he was shot with four bullets at close range when he greeted supporters at a government meeting in the central Slovak town of Handlova. The attack left him in serious condition in hospital and needing hours of surgery.

His attacker, identified by prosecutors as 71-year old Juraj C., was detained on the spot and charged with attempted premeditated murder. In his video remarks, Fico said that he felt no hatred toward the attacker, who he described as “only a messenger of evil and political hatred.”
