Canada’s Federal Court decision on Thursday that ruled the backbone of Ottawa’s single-use plastic ban is “unconstitutional and unreasonable” has generated disappointment and criticism for scientists and those in the environmental movement.

Environmental professor Miriam Diamond from the University of Toronto warned of the health implications of continuing to use single-use plastics, following the federal court’s decision.

“It ties up the courts, it uses taxpayers’ money to fight this and it emboldens the industry to further challenge environmental restrictions,” Diamond said. “I’m an environmental scientist — I’m not an activist, I’m a scientist. The science tells me that we cannot keep producing and consuming plastics. That’s the science.”
