Australia's states of Queensland and Victoria have reported record numbers of COVID-19 cases following the spread of the Omicron variant.
Laboratories offering tests have come under severe pressure in the state of New South Wales, with one Sydney facility wrongly informing more than 850 people they were negative.
Yet state governments, citing lower hospital admissions, are refusing to impose blanket lockdowns, although measures such as mandatory mask-wearing have been brought in.
