On top of the recalls on Malichita and Rudy brand cantaloupes, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has added recalls on granola bars and cereal from the Quaker Oats company due to fears they may be contaminated with salmonella.
Mexico’s Health Department on Friday ordered the temporary closure of a melon-packing plant implicated in salmonella infections that killed five people in Canada and three in the United States.
"Salmonella is a very common type of bacteria, but there are many different strains," says Joseph McPhee, a biomedical sciences professor at the Toronto Metropolitan University.
This most recent (cantaloupe) outbreak is caused by an unusual strain of salmonella and we actually don’t know much about how it causes disease.”
