Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer urged other U.S. senators on Tuesday to vote to pass the COVID-19 Hate Crimes Act – legislation that would give the Justice Department “crucial tools to crack down on the wave of racist violence” seen against the Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) community.

During a briefing where he spoke out against anti-Asian hate crimes and racism, he said former U.S. president Donald Trump “almost never discouraged,” and in his view, often seemed to encourage bigotry. “He often lead it himself,” Schumer said of Trump.

Sen. Mazie Hirono also spoke out against the use of racist terms against the AAPI community amid the COVID-19 pandemic, such as "kung flu," which Trump also called the illness caused by the novel coronavirus.
