The English River First Nation in Saskatchewan said at a Tuesday press conference in Saskatoon that 93 unmarked graves have been counted at the former site of the Beauval Indian Residential School, an update from the previous estimation of 83 following confirmation from an archaeologist.
“To date, there are 93 unmarked graves: 79 children and 14 infants,” English River First Nation chief Jenny Wolverine said. “Let me be clear… This is not a final number. It breaks my heart that there are likely more.”
The First Nation said earlier this month that phase one of a search of the property that started in August 2021 using ground penetrating radar is complete. More sites have been identified through survivor accounts and the First Nation said those areas would be searched over the next year.
Records from Beauval Indian Residential School have also been made available to the National Centre of Truth and Reconciliation and they will be translated from French and analyzed. The council has said it was shocked but not surprised by the findings.
