Two universities were hit by Russian shelling in eastern Ukraine early on Friday, Ukrainian authorities said.

A campus of the Donbas State Engineering Academy in Kramatorsk was shelled. No casualties were reported.

In Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city, a 53-year-old woman was found dead after an administrative building of the Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute was shelled.

Stanislav Lipovets, who works as a security guard at the destroyed building, said emergency services retrieved her body from under a window.

"They (emergency services) found her right under the window from the other side... There is nothing we can change now."

The head of Kharkiv Police, Volodymyr Tymoshko, said a total of five rockets hit the city, launched by Russia from Belgorod, a Russian city some 75 kilometres from Kharkiv.
