At least four people were killed Friday when Russian drones struck the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv during rush hour, prompting residents to run for shelter and damaging multiple buildings, including residential homes.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko accused Russia of wanting to "make a humanitarian catastrophe" and destroy the buildings within the city. He said at least one apartment building had been damaged, but that it was not the first to be hit by Russia in the city.

The Ukrainian air force said Monday it had destroyed 37 Russian drones since Sunday evening, making up approximately 85 per cent or more of the attack. According to their statement, not all the drones hit or were downed in the city of Kyiv, with some having hit other parts of the region.

Meanwhile, residents and emergency workers were searching for loved ones and survivors. Elena Mazur said she had received a phone call from her mother from under the rubble.

"We were told someone was taken to hospital. It might have been her, but we do not know. She is not picking up the phone," she said.
