Russia says missile strike hits Snake Island after Ukrainian forces raise flag

Ukraine released video on Thursday showing military servicemen installing the national flag on Snake Island in the Black Sea, however Russia's defence ministry later claimed a warplane had struck and killed an unspecified number of Ukrainian troops on the island.

Snake Island is a strategically important outpost because of its proximity to sea lanes close to Ukraine's port of Odessa.

Russia had captured the island early in the war, but said they withdrew last week as a "gesture of goodwill" that showed Moscow was not obstructing UN efforts to open a humanitarian corridor allowing grains to be shipped from Ukraine's ports.
