Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accepted the remains of Sergeant Zachary Baumel, an Israeli tank commander who was killed during the Lebanon War in 1982, in a ceremony held at the Russian Ministry of Defence building in Moscow on Thursday.
"I want to thank you from all the people of Israel, from the Defence Forces of Israel, and on behalf of the mothers and fathers of the soldiers," Netanyahu said.
Twenty-one-year-old Sergeant Zachary Baumel’s body was never recovered following the battle of Sultan Yacoub, a clash between the Israel Defense Forces and the Syrian Army in the Bekaa Valley in Lebanon on 11 June 1982, which resulted in the deaths of over 20 Israeli troops and more than 30 injured soldiers.
During a meeting on Thursday between Netanyahu and Russian President Vladimir Putin, the former thanked the Russian leader for Moscow’s role in recovering the body.
