Around 2,000 people celebrated in Bucharest on Monday after Romania's Supreme Court upheld a three-and-a-half year prison sentence for corruption against Romanian Social Democratic Party (PSD) leader Liviu Dragnea.
Dragnea was convicted last June of having two party members paid by a public agency for fake jobs. Dragena appealed, but the country's top court upheld the conviction on Monday.
Footage shows protesters cheering, dancing and chanting as Dragnea was taken to jail.
The PSD has called in an emergency meeting for Tuesday evening, while the presidency of the party is reportedly being covered on a temporary basis by Prime Minister Viorica Dancila.
Dragnea, widely seen as the country's most powerful politician, was already convicted of electoral fraud in 2015 and received a suspended one-year sentence.
