With both the Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames securing berths in the second round of the NHL playoffs with thrilling Game 7 wins, the Battle of Alberta playoff edition will be introduced to a new generation of fans in the province for the first time in 31 years.

“I think it’s great for the game, or the NHL, to have those fierce rivalries get together finally again in the playoffs. You think about it, it’s been 31 years— that’s a long time to not be playing your arch-rival,” former Calgary Flame Colin Patterson said.

“This is going to be a seven-game series,” predicted Oilers great Wayne Gretzky, who starred in several Battle of Alberta’s throughout the 1980s.

With Game 1 set to start Wednesday night in Calgary, Global News' Steve Autio takes a closer look at this storied rivalry.
