The head of the RCMP failed to address complaints about the Force’s response to violence against Indigenous lobster fisheries in southwestern Nova Scotia on Wednesday.

RCMP Commissioner Brenda Lucki said she strongly condemns any act of violence. She said RCMP officers can’t be in every location but said “when we are there and when we are made aware of those actions, we will step in.”

But she failed to provide any reason why videos taken at multiple scenes appear to show RCMP officers standing by as Nova Scotia’s Indigenous communities have faced violent and heated opposition from mostly non-Indigenous commercial fishers.

Lucki insisted that “the violence and criminal activity will not be tolerated” and that the force will respond.
