Queen Elizabeth II, Britain's longest-reigning monarch, was well-known for her life-long interest in animals and sports. Throughout most of her reign, she was accompanied by her corgi dogs, which earned a reputation for snapping at the heels of royal retainers. Her pets were descended from a dog named Susan, one she received as an 18th birthday gift from her parents.

Following Her Majesty's passing, British media reported on Monday that Prince Andrew and his ex-wife Sarah, Duchess of York, will look after the late Queen's beloved corgis.

Lesser known of late Her Majesty’s animals are the hundreds of swans swimming along the bends of River Thames below Windsor Castle, who feed off of the treats brought by visitors on the riverbank.

Succeeding his mother, King Charles III has inherited the country’s unmarked swans in a shared ownership with old trade associations Vintners and Dyers. “The King has the right to claim any swan swimming in open waters, unmarked, if he so wishes,” said the King’s swan marker, David Barber.

“Not all the swans belong to the King. But if he wishes to claim them, he can,” Barber said, referring to a tradition that has dated back to medieval times and preferring not to put a number on the swans owned by the monarch.

“As time went on, different people owned swans. The crown gave them the right to own them. And they had the young cygnets and they would fatten them up for the Christmas feasts. Of course, today swans are no longer eaten, and it's all a conservation and education exercise,” Barber said.
