Following the death of Queen Elizabeth II at the age of 96 on Thursday, former prime minister Jean Chrétien reacted to the news.

“She was respected everywhere – there must be millions and millions of people who are sad at this moment. And she had a great life and it was always a lot of dignity and she was an extremely pleasant person in private – I had the privilege to meet her for the first time in 1967,” the former prime minister said.

“I met her so many times that I had occasion to do things with her or for her at her request and she was great to me – she gave me the order of merit. I was a very lucky man and my wife too – we spent four days or five days in 1970 in the north. She came for the Centennial for the North West Territories and we spent days with her in the plane,” Chrétien recalled.
