Seismologist Dr Stephen Hicks explains how the epicentre of the earthquake occurred over a distance of 400 kilometres, appearing as a tear in the earth's crust, rather than a single point.

Tens of thousands of aftershocks can be expected from the quake over the following weeks and months, but with reducing severity after the first one, says Dr Hicks.

Buildings in earthquake prone areas in richer countries can be built to resist shaking, but over time building standards can slip and become complacent, he added.
