Several people were arrested as anti-COVID lockdown protests were held in China’s largest city, Shanghai, on Sunday.
Video posted to social media showed police dragging a protester through the street as other demonstrators looked on.
Protests flared up against heavy COVID-19 curbs after a deadly fire in China’s far west sparked widespread anger. It took emergency workers three hours to extinguish the fire, a delay many attributed to obstacles caused by anti-virus measures.
Protesters called for the end of the Chinese Communist Party and for President Xi Jinping to resign.
The wave of civil disobedience is unprecedented in mainland China since Xi Jinping assumed power a decade ago.
