Baltimore prosecutors dropped criminal charges against Adnan Syed on Tuesday in the 1999 killing of Hae Min Lee, a case that was chronicled in the first season of the hit podcast “Serial,” after latest DNA testing conducted on evidence "never tested before" excluded Syed's.

A Baltimore judge last month overturned Syed’s murder conviction and ordered him released from prison, where the 41-year-old had spent more than two decades. But his murder, kidnapping and robbery charges lingered while the city State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby’s office considered whether to dismiss his case or try him again.

"Equally heartbreaking is the pain and the sacrifice and the trauma that has been imposed not just on [Lee's] family, but Adnan and his family, who together spent 23 years in prison for a crime as a result of a wrongful conviction," Mosby said at the press conference.
