Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and the Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby were among the world leaders and dignitaries who paid tribute to Prince Philip on Thursday following his death at the age of 99.

"Prince Philip will be remembered as a champion for young people, a decorated naval officer, a dedicated philanthropist, and a constant in the life of Queen Elizabeth II," Trudeau said during a press conference Thursday morning.

The Royal Family announced at approximately 12 p.m. local time that the Duke of Edinburgh had passed away peacefully in his sleep at Windsor Castle.

Welby said he leaves a legacy through how he served his country.

"I think he leaves a legacy of imagination, of entrepreneurialism, of saying I will not accept that things need to go downhill, I will not accept that things need to be bad," Welby said in London.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, U.K. Opposition Leader Keir Starmer, and the first ministers of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland also paid tribute to the prince, calling him an "extraordinary public servant" and remarking on his "steadfast support" for the Queen.
