Al Jazeera’s senior political analyst Marwan Bishara says the possible captive release deal should have been the beginning of a more “permanent ceasefire”.

His comments come after Netanyahu said any pause in the fighting in Gaza or deal with Hamas will not mean the end of war.

“After 17 years of besieging the Gaza Strip, now to continue pounding it, bombing it, killing children,” Bishara said. “It’s utter madness.

“The Israeli military did not want this [deal] and … the Israeli political elite did not want it,” Bishara said, adding that mounting public pressure has pushed them towards agreeing to it.
