Pope Francis was greeted with much fanfare as he touched down in Bahrain on Thursday. The visit to the island nation is only the second visit by a pope to the Arabian Peninsula, after Francis visited the United Arab Emirates in 2019.

During his visit to the kingdom, the pope highlighted what he called the “forgotten war” in Yemen and said his prayers were with everyone impacted by the war, but especially children, the elderly and the sick.

As part of his trip to Bahrain, the Pope is expected to address a forum intended to call for “peaceful coexistence” of Eastern and Western religions.

In Bahrain, which is approximately 70 per cent Muslim, a small community of about 160,000 Catholics – made up mostly of foreign workers – are able to practice their faith openly, unlike in Saudi Arabia.
