To mark Good Friday, a Christian holiday commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, cities around the world marked the occasion with a variety of commemorations.

Pope Francis arrived in a wheelchair on Friday to preside over the Good Friday mass in St. Peter’s Basilica at the Vatican. The Vatican added in a statement that the pontiff will skip tonight's outdoor "Way of the Cross" procession due to cold weather. The Pope, 86, spent four days in the hospital last week for treatment for bronchitis after complaining of breathing difficulties

In Germany, hundreds of people lined the streets of Bensheim south of Frankfurt to watch the traditional reenactment of Jesus’ walk to his death played by amateur actors. The procession, which depicts scenes from the Bible, is known for its elaborate props and costumes and is performed in Bensheim every year on Good Friday, when Christians believe Jesus was crucified.

In the Mexican colonial city of Taxco, the Procession of the Flagellants and Crucified carried bundles of thorny branches on their shoulder as flagellants whipped themselves along the procession, followed by thousands of onlookers who didn’t want to miss the historical and highly devotional ceremony.
