The 2020 National Women's Soccer League got their Champions Cup underway in Utah with the defending champions North Carolina Courage facing off against Portland Thorns FC. Prior to the match, all players and substitutes took a knee during the national anthem to support those protesting police brutality and systemic racism. Quarterback Cam Newton signed a one-year, $7.5 million dear with the New England Patriots. Newton was cut by the Carolina Panthers after an injury riddles 2019 season.
