Tourists flocked to Iceland’s Fagradalsfjall volcano, about 32 kilometres from the capital Reykjavik to watch as it spewed lava and streams of molten rock.

A pair of onlookers from Vancouver, B.C., described the experience as “amazing” but “kinda scary.”

Visitors from Estonia commented that they were hiking and "wanted to have a different kind of picnic... A picnic by a volcano!"

The eruption in an uninhabited valley in southwest Iceland is not far from Keflavik Airport, Iceland’s international air traffic hub. The airport remained open and no flights were disrupted.

The Icelandic Meteorological Office predicted favourable wind and weather for viewing the volcano but warned of dangerous gases, new fissures opening and fast-moving lava flows.
