Eyewitnesses described an explosion that ripped through a street in the busy Latin Quarter of central Paris on Wednesday, causing the wall of a design school to collapse, blowing out windows and injuring at least 16 people.

"I saw a gigantic fireball, 20 or 30 metres high, as you see in the movies or on TV usually... as soon as I realized what was going on, we really smelled the smell of gas in the entire street," a witness said.

The Paris prosecutor's office said it was too early to say what caused the blast.
