Deputy Fire Marshal with the Ontario Ministry of the Solicitor General, Tim Beckett, said on Sunday that the Fire Marshal's office is tasked with determining the cause and circumstances of the explosion that occurred on Merivale Road on Jan. 13.

However, he said the investigation will take time and it’s much too early to determine the cause of the event.

He added a team of 10 fire investigators, fire protection specialists, a forensics engineer, and a supervisor and operations manager were deployed to the location and has concluded examination of aerial and drone images, interviews with a number of witnesses and is starting to use heavy machinery to remove debris to start collecting evidence.

Ottawa Police inspector Frank D’Aoust said the explosion site is very challenging due to heavy layers of debris, and that police are monitoring forecasted snowstorm which will impact site examination and are making contingency plans.

Dr. Louise McNaughton-Filion, the regional supervising coroner at the Ottawa office said that one person was deceased and five others are missing.

Four human remains have been "localized at the site" but haven’t been recovered for examination due to safety issues at this point.
