Orange County Sheriff Don Barne, along with law enforcement officers, provided an update on Sunday’s shooting at the Geneva Presbyterian Church that left 1 dead and 5 others injured.

Police identified the suspect as David Chou, 68, of Las Vegas, Nevada. He has one family member residing in the U.S.

Sheriff Don Barne said the attack was isolated and the suspect acted alone in a “politically motivated hate incident.”

The shooting happened during a lunch reception to honor a former pastor of a Taiwanese congregation that uses the Geneva Presbyterian Church for its worship services.

Authorities said the victims injured in the shooting included four Asian men, ages 66, 75, 82 and 92, and one Asian woman, age 86.

Police also identified the deceased victim as Dr. John Cheng, 52, describing him as a hero after he charged the gunman, which allowed other congregants to intervene.

Chou drove to Orange County on Saturday, Barnes said. He was not a regular attendee of the church and has no known ties to the congregation.
