Ontario's COVID-19 modelling shows cresting of cases, but ICUs and workplaces remain issues

Co-Chair of the Ontario COVID-19 Science Advisory Table Dr. Adalsteinn (Steini) Brown presented the latest modelling data in the province on Thursday, which showed a cresting of cases at a “very high” level, but “incredible pressure” on the intensive care units and elevated workplace mobility are still posing major issues in trying to get the third wave of the pandemic under control.

“The efforts of Ontarians are making a difference,” officials said in a presentation before outlining challenges Ontario is facing.

When it comes to projected daily case counts, scientists and medical professionals said Ontario avoided the worst-case scenario (up to almost 8,000 new cases a day) due to the stay-at-home order imposed earlier in April.

Ontario’s supply of COVID-19 vaccines is scheduled to increase in the coming weeks as the province continues its immunization rollout to Phase 2 priority groups. Starting next week, the province is scheduled to receive nearly 790,000 doses of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine each week for four weeks.

Ontario is reporting 3,871 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday. The provincial total now stands at 459,477.
