During a COVID-19 update on Thursday, Ontario’s chief medical officer of health Dr. Kieran Moore said the province would cut the isolation requirement for symptomatic individuals who received a positive test down to five days from the earlier 10-day quarantine period.

He said the five-day period would start from the onset of symptoms, but added that those who live or work in high-risk settings would still be required to isolate for 10 days.

Moore said that starting Friday, Dec. 31, the province would begin offering publicly-funded PCR testing for only “vulnerable” individuals with “significant medical issues” who are symptomatic or at risk of developing COVID-19, and for those who work and live in high-risk settings such as hospitals, long-term care and retirement homes.

Moore also announced Thursday that Ontarians in long-term care homes, retirement residences and congregate settings are now eligible for a fourth dose of the COVID-19 vaccine as long as three months have passed since they received their third dose.
