Stewart Rhodes, founder of the far-right militia Oath Keepers, was sentenced on Thursday to 18 years for orchestrating a weeks-long plot that culminated in his followers attacking the U.S. Capitol in a bid to keep President Joe Biden’s election win from being certified.

Rhodes, 58, is the first person charged in the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol to be sentenced for seditious conspiracy and his sentence is the longest handed down so far.

Another Oath Keepers leader, Kelly Meggs, was sentenced to 12 years in prison.

Edward Tarpley, a member of his legal team, called Rhodes a “political prisoner” and said he was convicted “because of his words.”

Before announcing Rhodes’ sentence, U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta described a defiant Rhodes as a "continued threat" to the United States and to democracy.
