An influx of new graduates and foreign trained nurses into the public health system has seen a drop in overall vacancies down from the 4000 vacancies seen post-Covid.

New data provided to 1News shows the overall nursing shortage has dropped to 1800 – from 4000 mid-last year excluding Canterbury data.

A real pinch-point is across the mental health services which has 410 vacancies, followed by close to 300 vacancies across critical care and emergency nursing roles. It comes as there’s still an influx of foreign nurses looking for work – but not quite the skill match we need.
