Members of New Zealand's parliament voted to change the country's gun laws on Wednesday in Wellington, in a move spurred by the Christchurch mosque shootings which saw 50 people killed in March.
"New Zealand stands apart in its widespread availability of weapons of such destructive nature and force. The military style semi-automatic weapons are available or have been available in this country to that degree. Assault rifles have been available to that degree, and today, Mr Speaker, that anomaly ends," said New Zealand's Prime Minister Jacinda Ahern.
Lawmakers voted 119-1 to ban all military style assault rifles as well as most semiautomatic weapons.
