The wife of a victim of last Friday's shooting urged the gunman to "clean your heart, be a human being," as people gathered near Christchurch's Al Noord Mosque on Tuesday to lay flowers and pay their respects to the attack's victims.
"I say to the guy, clean your heart, and be human. Color doesn't matter, religion doesn't matter, be a human," said Mrs. Sharifzei, whose husband is in intensive care at a Christchurch hospital after suffering from gunshot wounds.
Mufti Zeeyad Ravat from Melbourne, Australia visited the scene and led a prayer at the vigil, after having visited victims at a hospital. "It's unfortunate that the rotten scum of this world has chosen such a beautiful country to tarnish. As Muslim leaders, we take the stance and we say catergorically this is not New Zealand's fault," Ravat said.
A total of 50 people were killed in the shootings and a further 50 were wounded in what was New Zealand's worst attack.
The main suspect, 28-year-old Australian Brenton Tarrant, appeared in court on Saturday charged with murder.
