The Alberta government is bringing in new supports for businesses that choose to implement the COVID-19 Restrictions Exemption Program.

Alberta Premier Jason Kenney made the announcement on Thursday during the province’s regularly scheduled COVID-19 update.

The new supports will focus on three key areas. A $2,000 grant for eligible businesses that choose to implement the program, $1 million for training to support the safety of workers when implementing the program and legislation to protect businesses from legal challenges.

The government is also doubling fines for contravening public health orders, including the mistreatment of workers, from $2,000 to $4,000.

Alberta’s Restrictions Exemption Program came into effect on Sept. 20.

The Restrictions Exemption Program allows businesses and venues to operate without capacity limits and other public health measures if they require proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test result from anyone entering.
