A prototype TV screen created by a university professor in Japan could give viewers the chance to actually taste what they see on screen.

The "Taste the TV," created by Homei Miyashita of Meiji University, uses 10 canisters in combination to create the tastes of 20 types of food and sprays the flavour, based on programmed recipes, onto a "hygienic film" that then slides on a flat-screen TV for people to lick.

Homei said his hope is during the COVID-19 era, it will allow people stuck indoors to still find ways to interact with the outside world.

If manufactured for commercial purposes, it would cost just over CAD$1,100 according to the team behind "Taste the TV."
