Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte has apologized for the role the Netherlands played in slavery and slave trade, saying the nation enabled and profited from it.
Government ministers also visited former colonies to make similar statements. At one point in the 17th century, the Dutch West India company was the largest transatlantic slave trader.
