NATO military chiefs discuss war in Ukraine, Finland and Sweden's application

North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) chair of the Military Committee Admiral Rob Bauer, Supreme Allied Cmdr. Europe General Tod Wolters and Supreme Allied Cmdr. Transformation Gen. Philippe Lavigne held a news conference in Brussels, Belgium on Thursday following a meeting of NATO Military Chiefs of Defence to discuss Russia's war in Ukraine.

Bauer praised Ukraine for their efforts in the war and reiterated that NATO would continue to back the nation.

And as Finland and Sweden have applied to join NATO, Bauer also said following the application process, they will have security assurances once they are members. However, a group of nations have agreed to provide the two countries with security assurance until then.

The official applications, handed over by Finland and Sweden’s ambassadors to NATO, set a security clock ticking. Russia, whose war on Ukraine spurred them to join the military organization, has warned that it wouldn’t welcome such a move, and could respond.
