Tens of thousands have taken to the streets defying a ban after the military coup and detention of elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

Water cannons have been used against the protesters, who are reacting to a military coup, and the state television channel reported injuries to police in their attempts to remove protesters - its first mention of the movement since General Min Aung Hlaing and his allies took control.

Rallies of more than five people have been outlawed and an 8pm to 4am curfew put in place, but large crowds chose to turn out to chant slogans and show their anger at the new military rule.
