Montreal police brace for riots as Canadiens advance to Stanley Cup final

The Montreal Canadians are on the verge of ending a 28-year Stanley Cup drought, following the NHL teams best playoff runs in decades, after the Habs eliminated the Vegas Golden Knights in overtime.

That’s raising the spirits of hockey fans in the city, where months of harsh COVID-19 restrictions are finally beginning to lift.

On Thursday, there was heavy police presence in the downtown core — where a handful of streets were closed off to traffic early after the first period — as chants of “Olé, Olé, Olé” filled the air by a throng of Montrealers donning red, white and blue.

Police officers are bracing for riots, regardless of the outcome. Dan Spector reports.
