Nearly 130,000 refugees and migrants have taken the Balkan Route to the European Union this year.
EU border agency Frontex says it is the highest number since 2015 when hundreds of thousands of Syrians fleeing the war reached Europe.
The EU has increased its border protection, making it harder for people to enter the bloc.
But there is another risk on these journeys - with some people getting caught up in gang wars between armed smugglers.

Al Jazeera’s Step Vaessen reports from the Serbian-Hungarian border.
